Southshore Road Project Update

Road Paving

Improvements Coming Soon!!

Southshore Road from Twin Bridges Road to Blue Gill Road is still scheduled for improvements in 2019.

During the course of paving Blue Gill Road earlier this year, all the asphalt equipment utilized Southshore Road as the primary access to the paving work on Blue Gill Road.  Within a few days, the county realized that Southshore Road was not built to withstand the heavy construction equipment.  Although the condition of the road before the work began on Blue Gill was unsatisfactory (which was the reason this road was placed on the TSPLOST list for resurfacing), the heavy equipment traveling on this road to reach Blue Gill Road over a period of several weeks, resulted in rapid deterioration of Southshore Road.  Given the very poor condition of the road from the heavy equipment use, several areas of the road deteriorated very rapidly resulting in numerous potholes.  The county decided to patch these areas as a temporary measure until which time a permanent solution could be found.

As this was occurring, the county reassessed the original approach for repairs to this road - which was asphalt resurfacing only, and decided that a longer term fix was necessary to ensure a road that would last 15-20 years as opposed to a 5-7 year lifespan.

The county has chosen a solution for the work and is currently preparing bid documents to advertise for this project and select a contractor with a completion date set for prior to December 31, 2019.  In the interim, the county thought it appropriate to re-stripe the road with paint - which is a very low cost approach to improve traffic safety until which time the road can be reconstructed and paved followed by thermoplastic striping (the type of striping that is very visible at night).

Thank you for your patience.  The goal is to provide the residents with a long lasting road and we are well on our way to making that happen.
